Elon Musk's xAI just launched Grok Build, a coding agent and CLI for building apps and automating workflows. It's in early beta, available first for SuperGrok Heavy subscribers.
This is xAI's direct shot at Anthropic's Claude Code — the coding agent space is getting crowded, and the battle lines are drawn.
The timing is notable: just yesterday, a story broke that Microsoft plans to remove most of its Claude Code licenses and push developers toward GitHub Copilot CLI. xAI is going the opposite direction — actually investing in a coding agent product.
What's interesting here: Microsoft dumping Claude Code might actually hurt Anthropic more than it helps GitHub Copilot. Developers who wanted Claude Code will need a home. xAI just opened the door.
The coding agent market is consolidating around three players: Anthropic, OpenAI, and now xAI. Microsoft is trying to own the tooling layer (GitHub) while the AI labs fight for the model layer.
For developers, more competition means better tools. For the AI labs, it's a land grab — whoever owns the coding workflow owns the developer.
The question is whether xAI can actually execute on a coding product. Grok has a reputation for being... unconventional. We'll see if Grok Build is for real or just another name on the roster.
